From the Captain...
Just like many other service workers, mates are dependent on receiving tips. Twenty percent is now the going rate for a mate who works 100% for your charter. The mate's responsibilities begin before you arrive at the boat.
The mate:
- Loads the boat with bait and ice
- Cleans the bathroom
- Removes the garbage from the boat
- Sets up all the fishing gear
- Ties and unties dock lines
- Nets and/or gaffs the fish
- Fillets the fish
- Throws away the racks
- Performs anchor duties
- Cleans the entire boat
All said, a very hard job. I know because I've done it on a party boat which is even harder.
Even if you're not completely happy with the mate's performance, you want to tip at least 10%. If you're not happy with the mate, please tell the captain.
