Seahag2 - What to Tip the Mate

From the Captain...

Just like many other service workers, mates are dependent on receiving tips. Twenty percent is now the going rate for a mate who works 100% for your charter. The mate's responsibilities begin before you arrive at the boat.

The mate:

  • Loads the boat with bait and ice
  • Cleans the bathroom
  • Removes the garbage from the boat
  • Sets up all the fishing gear
  • Ties and unties dock lines
  • Nets and/or gaffs the fish
  • Fillets the fish
  • Throws away the racks
  • Performs anchor duties
  • Cleans the entire boat

All said, a very hard job. I know because I've done it on a party boat which is even harder.
Even if you're not completely happy with the mate's performance, you want to tip at least 10%. If you're not happy with the mate, please tell the captain.
